‘Cláusulas para um espaço que não existe’
Quando recebeu a carta, pensou primeiro no erro burocrático. O envelope era cinza, sem remetente, e carregava apenas seu nome escrito numa caligrafia excessivamente precisa, como se cada letra tivesse sido desenhada por alguém que jamais escrevera à mão antes.
Dentro havia um contrato.
As páginas eram amareladas, embora o papel cheirasse a novo. No topo, em letras pequenas:
“CLÁUSULAS PARA UM ESPAÇO QUE NÃO EXISTE.”
Ele riu sozinho no apartamento vazio. A pia estava cheia de pratos, a geladeira emitia um zumbido contínuo, e a chuva escorria pela janela como um pensamento cansado.
Passou os olhos pelas cláusulas.
Cláusula I
Todo indivíduo ocupa um espaço simbólico na realidade, ainda que tal espaço não exista materialmente.
Cláusula II
O ocupante será responsabilizado pela manutenção emocional desse espaço.
Cláusula III
Não haverá compensação ao final do processo.
Releu aquilo três vezes.
Não porque estivesse confuso, mas porque sentiu algo pior: reconhecimento.
Dobrou as folhas e as colocou sobre a mesa.
Tentou voltar ao trabalho, mas o cursor piscando na tela parecia zombar dele.
Fazia semanas que escrevia relatórios para uma empresa que vendia softwares administrativos para outras empresas que também pareciam não produzir nada além de relatórios.
Às vezes imaginava o mundo inteiro como uma engrenagem girando no vazio, sustentada apenas pelo medo coletivo de admitir que não havia máquina alguma.
À noite, sonhou com corredores infinitos.
Portas alinhadas em ambos os lados. Em cada uma delas havia uma placa com nomes de pessoas. Amigos mortos. Antigas amantes. Colegas esquecidos da escola. Seus pais.
Quando abriu uma das portas, encontrou apenas um cômodo branco e sem móveis.
Nada.
Abriu outra.
Nada.
Outra.
Nada novamente.
Ao fim do corredor havia um espelho. Quando se aproximou, percebeu que seu reflexo não o imitava exatamente.
O homem do outro lado parecia mais velho, mais cansado.
O reflexo falou primeiro:
— Você ainda acredita que existe um centro para tudo isso?
Acabou suando.
Nos dias seguintes, começou a notar pequenas falhas na realidade.
Uma mulher no metrô repetia exatamente o mesmo movimento de ajeitar o cabelo a cada dois minutos.
Um cachorro ficou parado na esquina por horas olhando para uma parede.
O jornaleiro perto de seu prédio disse “bom dia” com a mesma entonação perfeita durante três manhãs seguidas, como uma gravação.
Começou a suspeitar que o mundo não estava vivo.
Talvez nunca tivesse estado.
Passou então a reler o contrato obsessivamente.
Havia cláusulas escondidas que antes não estavam ali.
Cláusula IX
O vazio percebido pelo ocupante não constitui defeito estrutural.
Cláusula XII
A consciência é um mecanismo temporário destinado a suportar a ausência de significado.
Cláusula XVII
Perguntas sem resposta deverão continuar sendo formuladas até a extinção do ocupante.
Ele tentou rasgar as páginas.
Na manhã seguinte, elas estavam intactas sobre a mesa.
Tentou queimá-las.
As folhas não pegavam fogo.
Tentou jogá-las fora.
À noite, encontrou o contrato novamente ao lado da cama.
Como um animal paciente.
A partir daí, começou a evitar pessoas.
Descobriu que toda conversa humana funcionava da mesma forma: duas solidões trocando ruídos para esquecer o abismo.
No trabalho, ouviu colegas discutindo metas trimestrais com uma seriedade religiosa.
Num bar, viu um casal brigando porque um deles não respondera mensagens. Na televisão, políticos prometiam futuros que sabiam impossíveis.
Tudo lhe pareceu grotesco.
A humanidade inteira atuando numa peça sem plateia.
Passou então a caminhar pela cidade durante a madrugada.
As luzes dos prédios acesas pareciam olhos insônes.
Pensava nas milhares de pessoas acordadas naquele instante: algumas chorando, outras desejando morrer, outras tentando desesperadamente encontrar sentido em rotinas repetidas.
Mas sentido era apenas uma superstição sofisticada.
A razão humana havia construído ciência, leis, máquinas, religiões e sistemas filosóficos para evitar uma conclusão simples:
O universo não precisava de nós.
Nunca precisou.
A consciência talvez fosse apenas o acidente mais cruel da matéria: o instante em que o vazio ganhou olhos para contemplar a si mesmo.
Certa madrugada, encontrou uma porta no fim de um beco.
Nunca estivera ali antes.
Branca.
Sem maçaneta.
No centro, havia uma pequena placa metálica:
“ESPAÇO DESIGNADO AO OCUPANTE.”
Não sentiu medo.
Sentiu alívio.
Encostou a mão na porta e ela se abriu lentamente.
Do outro lado não havia escuridão.
Nem luz.
Havia ausência.
Um espaço impossível de descrever porque não continha forma, profundidade ou tempo.
Era como olhar para algo anterior à própria ideia de existência.
Então compreendeu.
Toda vida humana era uma tentativa desesperada de mobiliar aquele vazio.
Amor, trabalho, fé, arte, memória — móveis frágeis colocados dentro de um cômodo inexistente.
Nada permanecia.
Nada sustentava.
Nada respondia.
O universo não odiava os homens.
Isso exigiria interesse.
O universo apenas continuava.
Indiferente.
Elias deu um passo adiante.
O chão desapareceu imediatamente sob seus pés, mas não houve queda.
Seu corpo parecia dissolver-se em silêncio, como fumaça dentro de um espaço sem ar.
Antes de desaparecer completamente, ouviu uma última frase, vinda de lugar nenhum:
Cláusula Final
O ocupante esteve sozinho durante todo o processo.
Então até a consciência terminou. E o vazio, finalmente, deixou de ser observado
