‘Congada de Oliveira: quando a memória dança
para que a história não morra’
Em Minas Gerais, a história não vive apenas nos livros. Ela caminha pelas ruas ao som de tambores, veste coroas, empunha bastões, canta cantigas e transforma fé em resistência cultural. É exatamente isso que acontece na tradicional Congada de Oliveira, em Minas Gerais, uma manifestação que ultrapassa o campo do folclore e se estabelece como um verdadeiro patrimônio vivo da memória afro-brasileira.
A cidade de Oliveira carrega uma das expressões mais marcantes do congado mineiro, tradição que remonta ao período colonial e que possui raízes profundas no antigo Reino do Congo, na África Central. Historiadores apontam que já no século XVII existiam registros de coroações simbólicas de reis negros em irmandades religiosas no Brasil, especialmente ligadas à devoção de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, São Benedito e Santa Efigênia, santos que passaram a representar acolhimento espiritual aos negros escravizados.
A Congada nasceu do encontro doloroso entre dois mundos: de um lado, povos africanos arrancados brutalmente de sua terra; de outro, a imposição cultural europeia durante o processo escravagista. No entanto, aquilo que parecia apagamento tornou-se resistência. Os africanos preservaram ritmos, símbolos, espiritualidade e hierarquias reais de seus povos, adaptando-os ao contexto brasileiro.
Em Oliveira, assim como em outras cidades mineiras, a Congada acontece como um grande cortejo sagrado. As ruas tornam-se palco de um teatro histórico a céu aberto. O som grave dos tambores ecoa como batimentos cardíacos ancestrais. Caixas, reco-recos, pandeiros, ganzás e violas acompanham os cantos que misturam português com expressões de origem banto.
As músicas possuem um caráter profundamente espiritual e narrativo. Algumas canções exaltam os santos protetores:
“Viva o Rosário de Maria…”
Outras relembram a dor da escravidão, os ancestrais perdidos no Atlântico e o clamor pela liberdade. O canto geralmente é puxado por um capitão ou mestre, e o grupo responde em coro, uma dinâmica que simboliza unidade coletiva.
Entre os personagens representados estão figuras que remetem à estrutura de uma corte africana:
Rei Congo
Rainha Conga
Príncipes e princesas
Embaixador
Secretário
Capitães
Guerreiros
Vassalos
Conguinhos (crianças que perpetuam a tradição)
Esses personagens não aparecem por acaso. Eles representam a preservação simbólica da dignidade africana em um período em que pessoas negras foram desumanizadas pelo sistema escravocrata. Vestir uma coroa, naquele contexto histórico, era reafirmar humanidade diante de um sistema que tentava negá-la.
Um momento particularmente simbólico em muitas congadas mineiras e presente no imaginário popular de Oliveira é a homenagem à Princesa Isabel. Após a assinatura da Lei Áurea em 13 de maio de 1888, muitas guardas passaram a reverenciar a princesa como personagem de libertação. Durante os cortejos, é comum cânticos de agradecimento e menções simbólicas à figura da monarca.
Contudo, uma análise histórica mais profunda nos convida à reflexão: embora a princesa tenha assinado a lei, a verdadeira libertação foi construída também pela resistência negra diária, pelos quilombos, pelas irmandades, pela cultura e pela sobrevivência espiritual de um povo que jamais aceitou ser apagado.
A Congada também encena batalhas simbólicas entre cristãos e mouros, ou entre diferentes reinos africanos, representando conflitos, reconciliações e a coroação do rei. Essas dramatizações unem dança, teatro e religiosidade em um espetáculo profundamente rico em significados.
Sob a perspectiva da saúde integral, a Congada nos ensina algo poderoso: um povo adoece quando perde sua memória. Cultura também é saúde. Pertencimento também cura. Ritmo também organiza emoções. Espiritualidade também fortalece identidades.
A dança melhora o condicionamento físico. O canto coletivo fortalece vínculos sociais. A espiritualidade reduz sentimentos de isolamento. A preservação cultural combate o adoecimento emocional causado pelo apagamento histórico.
Talvez por isso, geração após geração, os tambores continuam ecoando em Oliveira.
Porque enquanto houver Congada, haverá memória.
E enquanto houver memória, haverá resistência.
