Ramos António Amine: Conto ‘O segundo sinal’
Aquele que nascera da mistura proibida entre uma das filhas da quinta e um lavrador de mãos encaladas conheceu, desde o primeiro sopro, o peso da rejeição. Para os filhos legítimos da quinta, não passava de um erro, um desvio na ordem preservada, um corpo estranho num lugar onde a pureza era lei.
Mas a mãe, contra todas as vozes e silêncios, acolheu-o. E jurou, com a firmeza de quem desafia o destino de Édipo, protegê-lo da comunhão dos ímpios e oferecer-lhe aquilo que a própria quinta tinha de mais paradoxal: um luxo nascido do lixo, uma dignidade construída sobre restos.
O miúdo cresceu, assim, como uma promessa cuidadosamente lascada. Educado segundo os mais elevados valores da Era das Luzes, inalava o mundo com uma sede que não era apenas de saber, mas de fuga. Para além das primeiras letras, mergulhou nas línguas antigas, grego, latim, e nas estruturas rígidas do alemão. A mãe acreditava, com uma fé quase ingénua, que o domínio das línguas para lá dos muros da quinta lhe daria asas suficientes para os ultrapassar.
Aos cinco anos, já lia clássicos vindos de terras distantes, como se cada palavra fosse um ensaio de liberdade.
Enquanto isso, o pai era arrancado da lavra e lançado ao garimpo, não por necessidade do tripalium, mas por vingança. Os irmãos da mãe não perdoavam o gesto que manchara o nome da quinta. E, pior ainda, não perdoavam o fruto desse gesto: um filho que desafiava a própria lógica da sua existência.
No garimpo, o homem encontrou um mundo ainda mais cruel do que aquele que deixara. Ali, descobriu que muitos dos considerados desaparecidos no outro lado da quinta não o estavam: haviam sido engolidos pela terra e pelo silêncio, mantidos como reféns de uma mina que alimentava, ironicamente, os próprios filhos da quinta, cultores da pureza e da ordem, à custa de silêncios cúmplices.
No primeiro dia, foi espancado. Chamaram-lhe intruso, ameaça, substituto. Cada golpe agravava-lhe a respiração curta, já marcada pela asma. Ainda assim, sobreviveu. E, como tantos outros no garimpo, aprendeu a sobreviver não pela força, mas pelo cansaço. Foi-se moldando à brutalidade, até que esta deixou de ser exceção e passou a ser regra.
Dias depois, encontrou ouro ensanguentado. Não um ouro qualquer, mas aquele que poderia reescrever destinos. Um brilho raro, quase impossível, como se a própria terra, por um instante, tivesse decidido recompensá-lo.
Mas a fortuna, para os condenados da terra, é sempre breve.
Um olhar trémulo seu gerou um gesto mal interpretado pelos outros. E vieram os golpes, desta vez mais pesados, mais decididos. Não resistiu. Caiu ali mesmo, entre a poeira e o silêncio cúmplice dos demais. O ouro mudou de mãos. O corpo, esse, foi descartado, lançado numa cova rasa, coberto à pressa, como se nunca tivesse acolhido algo valioso: uma alma.
Na quinta, o tempo seguia o seu curso, indiferente. O miúdo crescia. Os filhos da quinta arrastavam-se pelos corredores das decisões, alheios, ou fingindo sê-lo, ao que se passava no garimpo.
E, mesmo que soubessem, o silêncio seria sempre a sua primeira decisão.
Mas há verdades que recusam permanecer enterradas.
Um cão, guiado talvez pelo instinto, ou pela justiça que falta aos homens, desenterrou o que restava do corpo. E assim, o segredo começou a apodrecer à superfície. Espalhou-se em zum-zum, depois em olhares desviados, até alcançar os ouvidos daqueles que mais temiam a sua revelação.
Tentaram contê-lo. Falharam.
Porque há sempre quem escute onde não deve, quem veja o que lhe é interdito: a guardiã dos avisos ignorados. E assim, a notícia chegou até ela.
A mãe.
Recebeu-a como quem recebe uma sentença. Não chorou de imediato. Primeiro veio o niilismo: um esvaziamento moral, e depois um silêncio pesado, absoluto, como a pedra de Sísifo. Mais tarde, a certeza: ele estava morto. Espancado por ter encontrado, por um instante, aquilo que lhes poderia ter mudado a vida.
O medo instalou-se. Não o medo da morte dela ou do miúdo, mas o da permanência na quinta. Criar o filho ali, sozinha, dentro daqueles muros inumanos, isso, sim, parecia-lhe insuportável, e ao mesmo tempo uma contradição aos valores de igualdade, solidariedade e fraternidade sobre os quais fora educada.
E então decidiu.
Fugir.
Mas fugir implicava atravessar o impossível: muros altos, arames farpados, cães treinados para impedir a liberdade. Ainda assim, havia algo mais forte do que tudo isso, uma vontade crua, quase selvagem, de não pertencer mais àquele lugar.
Antes que o filho fosse estendido no altar da hipocrisia, como oferenda imolada pelos ímpios no seu próximo ritual, preferia a incerteza da liberdade à segurança contaminada. Preferia cair fora da quinta como uma prostituta ressuscitada a apodrecer dentro dela.
E foi assim, no silêncio de uma decisão sem retorno, que se anunciou o segundo sinal da queda da quinta.
